Abstract: William Shirer was a journalist, news correspondent, and writer. He is most known for his broadcasts from Berlin during World War II, and for his books about that time period, most notably Berlin Diary, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, and The Nightmare Years. Shirer was also one of only two western correspondents to cover the beginning of India's independence movement and whom Gandhi allowed into his inner circle. Shirer's collection contains diaries, broadcasts, manuscripts (fiction & non-fiction), news articles, lectures, correspondence, and other writings. This collection includes both Shirer's published and unpublished works.
Language: English [bulk], German, French
William L. Shirer (1904-1993) was a diarist, journalist, historian, novelist, and playwright. He was born in Chicago but, upon the death of his father in 1913, Shirer and his mother moved to his mother's hometown of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. There he attained his high school degree from Washington High (1921) and his Bachelor's Degree from Coe College (1925). Upon graduation Shirer immediately left for Europe where he became a copywriter for the Paris Tribune. In 1927 he became a foreign correspondent for the Chicago Tribune and in 1929 was promoted to Chief of the Central European Bureau. Over the next few years Shirer reported on India's independence movement, becoming one of the few western journalists with access to Mahatma Gandhi's inner circle. In 1934, Shirer became chief of the Berlin bureau for the Universal News Service and in 1937 moved to Vienna as CBS's European correspondent. The following year, Edward R. Murrow and Shirer began their now famous radio broadcasts as part of the European News Roundup, Murrow Reporting from London and Shirer from Berlin. As the war expanded throughout Europe, Shirer continued his broadcasts under heavy censorship from the German government. Shirer believed he was going to be arrested when he left Germany in December of 1940.
After he returned to the United States he continued broadcasting for CBS and writing for the New York Herald Tribune. During this time he published his first book, Berlin Diary (1941), which became a best seller. In a dispute with CBS, Shirer quit the station in 1947, and joined the Mutual Broadcasting System. He continued to write both fiction and non-fiction, and in 1960 published The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich which won the National Book Award in 1961. William Shirer continued to write until his death in 1993. Some of his works include: End of a Berlin Diary, The Traitor, Stranger Come Home, The Collapse of the Third Republic, Twentieth Century Journey: A Memoir of a Life and the Times (three volume autobiography), Gandhi: a memoir, and Love & Hatred: The Troubled Marriage of Leo and Sonya Tolstoy. In all, Shirer published sixteen titles, thirteen non-fiction and three fiction works.

Series 4: Diary 1919-1993
Series 4 Notes: William Shirer kept multiple diaries. Many of these are in bound journals, and many more are loose pages. Some of the diary is transcribed from the original for Shirer’s books and other writings.
There are few diary entries for 1957-58 and none for 1959. A note from Shirer states that he didn’t have time for his diary because he was working on the Third Reich book. 1959 is the year he finished the book.
Also included in this series are his: garden logs, daily calendars, address book/daily diary, his to-do lists, and some of his notes.|
