Instructional Services

The Reference Department offers a variety of courses to students, faculty, and staff on library resources and research strategies. Instructional sessions range from a general introduction to library resources and basic research skills, course-specific database searching and research skills, to one-on-one instruction.To improve the skills needed to be a successful student, researchers, and life long learner, we strongly encourage students and the Coe community to attend one or more of our services.


Faculty

Library sessions for beginning and lower level classes

Introduction to library resources and databases includes:

- Class tailored to your specific class or subject area
- Introduction to the library (where things are)
- Popular magazines vs. scholarly journals
- Evaluating content
- Basic searching skills
- Introduction to databases (emphasis on databases relevant to course subject area)
- Handouts relating to material covered

Library sessions for upper level classes

Upper level classes may include some or all of the following depending on the course and assignment

- Overview of basic searching skills
- Examine course specific databases and library material
- Provide research strategies on given topic or subject area
- Web site evaluation
- Hands-on database searching
- Handouts relating to course and assignment
