| Library
of Congress Subject Headings Use
LC Subject Headings (red volumes on table behind Reference
Counter) to identify the right words to search in the library
catalog and other databases. For example if you want
to find books on "Teenagers" looking up that word in LCSH
gives you the following information:
Teenagers
(May subdivide Geographically)
Here are entered works on people in the general age range
of 13-18 years.
UF
Adolescents (Use for)
Teen-agers
Teens
BT
Youth
(Broader term that might be useful)
NT
Abused teenagers (Narrower terms that might be useful)
Arts and teenagers
..........................
..........................
Teenage boys
Teenage girls
..........................
--Conduct
of life
(more specific aspect of Teenagers)
--Counseling
of (more
specific aspect of Teenagers)
.........................
.........................
The
broader and narrower terms would be helpful in adjusting the
scope of your search. You may also discover that your
word isn't used for subject searching in the catalog. In that
case you will be referred to another term. Many databases
include these kind of listings (often called thesauri) that
you may search online as you work through a search.
