For the past twenty-seven years I have been very actively involved at Coe College in research with students. This research is on glass and is both basic and applied. In particular, our work focuses on the relationship between structure at the atomic level and resulting physical properties. We have also discovered new families of glasses by rapid cooling liquids and other means. At Coe, we fabricate glasses, perform property measurementsSteve Feller - B.D. Sillman Professor of Physics and we do spectroscopic investigations of the atomic structure. I enjoy the resulting interaction with people and I enjoy the discoveries we have shared. In this time I have worked with about 150 students and we have written more than 100 journal papers. Also, we have attended and given more than 100 talks at national and international scientific meetings. Our work has been supported by an interesting variety of groups including the National Science Foundation, the Research Corporation, The McElroy Foundation of Iowa, The Maytag Foundation of Iowa, The States of Iowa and Texas, The British Government, the US-UK Fulbright Commission, The Society of Physics Students, The Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, the Council on Undergraduate Research, The Greek Government, Motorola Corporation, former students, colleagues, and Coe College. I look forward to many more years of doing science with more students.  This work has led to a number of exciting collaborations around the world. My primary collaborator is my colleague Professor Mario Affatigato, also of Coe College, who does optical measurements and modeling. He is also interested in physical properties and atomic arrangements of materials. My students, colleague, and I also work with Professors Adrian Wright and Roger Sinclair of Reading University (England), Dr. Natasha Vedishcheva of the Institute of Silicate Chemistry (St. Petersburg, Russia), Drs. Stratos Kamitsos and George Chryssikos of the National Hellenic Research Foundation (Athens, Greece),  Professor Steve Martin, (Iowa State University, Ames, IA), Professor Scott Kroeker of University of Manitoba (Canada), Professor Masao Kodama of Sojo University (Japan), Professor Seiji Kojima of University of Tsukuba (Japan), Professor Diane Holland of Warwick University (England) With these fine scientists we are able to add neutron scattering, vibrational spectroscopy, magnetic resonance, conductivity, velocity of sound, and thermodynamic methods to our measurement arsenal. Also my students, colleague, and I have had the pleasure of traveling around the world because of this research. For example in the past few years we have gone to the Rutherford-Appleton lab in England and the Institut Laue Langevin in France for neutron scattering, Reading University in England, to a laboratory in Shanghai, China for a month for optical measurements, to labs in Japan also for a month, to Indiana University and Iowa State University, to Sandia National Lab, to the University of Manitoba in Canada, the University of Warwick in England and more. We have recently attended conferences in Italy, Wales, Scotland, Bulgaria, Corning (NY), Maui, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Tuscon, San Diego, San Antonio, and more. Among my other interests are baseball, numismatics, and good food. I am a lifelong New York Yankees fan, perhaps because I grew up in Brooklyn, New York. I had the great fortune to have watched, in person and live, Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, Roger Maris, Yogi Berra, and dozens of others in one of the golden eras of baseball. In numismatics, I collect money of the American Civil War, World War II, and various interesting historical periods. I also specialize in various camp monies of the twentieth century. I serve as editor of the International Bank Note Society Journal, a quarterly of about 56 pages. Some of our students also help with the preparation of this magazine.  I am the father of Rachel (24) and Heidi (26) and my good wife of 35 years is Barbara. June 30, 2006.
