ELEMENTARY EDUCATION MAJOR

Following are the requirements for completion of licensure for elementary education at Coe.  Five of the required courses (indicated in italics below) can be taken before admission to the Teacher Education Program.  The courses indicated with an asterisk cannot be taken prior to admission to the program.  In order to be admitted, you must 1) attain a passing score on the CBASE basic skills test;  2) have a 2.7 overall grade point average;  3) have a 2.7 grade point average in your education courses and 4) submit a completed application to the Teacher Education Program and 5) meet the department's expectations on teaching-related dispositions.  Also, Elementary Practicum must be taken prior to all Methods courses.

Elementary Education Core courses:

Education Foundations (offered fall and spring terms)

Human Relations (offered fall and spring terms)

Exceptional Learners (offered fall and spring terms)

Educational Psychology (offered fall and spring terms)

Mathematics Comprehension for Teachers (offered spring term)

Reading Methods (offered spring term)

Mathematics Methods (offered fall term)

Physical Science Methods (offered fall term)

Social Studies Methods (offered spring term)

Any two of Health (spring), Music (spring), Art (fall) or PE Methods (fall). These are .5 credit classes, and meet for 7 weeks.

Student Teaching (full time in fall or spring semester)

All elementary education majors are advised to add a reading, science or mathematics endorsement to their K-6 classroom license.  Most majors obtain the reading endorsement in addition to a minor in the liberal arts.  The chart below shows a recommended order of courses for elementary education majors, including the required courses for the reading endorsement.  Note that the courses in bold should be taken in this order; the other methods courses can be moved from one year to another, but are taught in only one semester.
