Off-Campus Study Opportunities

Coe theatre majors are encouraged to study for a semester off-campus. Many students elect to participate in Coe’s New York Term in the spring semester of their junior or senior year. The internship component of this program has helped several Coe students make connections for a career after Coe. Others like the opportunity to study theatre and art on the ACM London/Florence Program. Those looking for a focus on the arts with an internship component closer to home elect to go to Chicago on the ACM Chicago Arts Program. Finally, Coe students are very resourceful in finding an off-campus study program that suits their specific interests with the help of Coe’s Career Services Staff.

Studied for one semester in Greece.

“Studying in Greece was a great experience. I loved being immersed in a culture so different from my own. It was also a great way to study classical theatre on site. Nothing can compare to reading the plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides in the theatre where they were first performed.”

Katie is currently doing a summer acting internship with Riverside Shakespeare Festival in Iowa City, and that she’ll be playing the role of Anne Page in The Merry Wives of Windsor.  The production dates are June 14 – July 8.

“I am grateful for the opportunity I had to study in the Czech Republic. Prague is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and it became my playground. I was able to travel around Central Europe and absorb many different cultures. This exposure opened my eyes as an artist and a global community member. My experiences will continue to influence my education and my artistic expression. Central Europe now holds my heart and I hope to return soon.”

Tanner CurlTanner Curl
Major: English Education
Hometown: Ionia, Iowa
Activities at Coe: Off-Stage Players, Student Senate, Coe Cosmos
Studied for one semester in Wales.

“Growing up in rural Iowa, my family’s concept of travel was an occasional vacation to visit relatives in Missouri or South Dakota. There is nothing like living and studying among the people of different cultures. In these environments so different from the ones we are accustomed to, we are forced to look at who we are, where we are going, and where we have been. As James Baldwin writes, “I met a lot of people in Europe. I even encountered myself.”

Coe’s New York Term
Internship in New York City: Paper Mill Playhouse as costume shop assistant

“New York Term is an amazing opportunity. It offers you a chance to live and work in New York and give you a world that you just can’t get anywhere else. I still find it hard to believe that I spent three months working for a professional, regional theatre during the day and seeing art, music, theatre, and dance almost every night. While there, I learned the city (something that can’t be overestimated), met people who I’m still in contact with and who I am working for, designed my New York premier, and found a graduate program I desperately want to be in. Basically I found that I could go from a small liberal arts college and a normal Midwest upbringing and thrive in a fast-paced, exciting, challenging metropolis like New York City.”

Lillian Vince
Major: Theatre Arts with acting emphasis
