Tri-Delta History

~The Delta Eta chapter was established at Coe in 1912.  

~“Trident” chewing gum was named after Tri Delta.  There are deltas on the package and the design is done in silver gold and blue.

~Since 1974, Tri Delta has raised over $10 million in support of Children’s Cancer hospitals and research facilities.

~The money that Tri Delta has donated to St. Jude has been so significant they could have built a wing funded by us.

~Tri Delta was the first women’s fraternity to be founded as a national organization with complete plans for governmental structure and expansion.

~335 Tri Deltas served in the Armed Forces during World War II.

~Tri Delta’s founding members were Sarah Ida Shaw, Eleanor Dorcas Pond, Florence Isabelle Stewart, and Isabel Morgan Breed.

~In 1907, Sarah Ida Shaw published and successfully marketed The Sorority Handbook.
The book contained advice on the organization and operation of fraternities.

~Florence Isabelle Stewart was an excellent student.  She was the salutatorian of her high school class.  From 1889-1893 she served as the Grand Secretary.

~Isabel Morgan Breed refused all of her sorority bids because deep religious convictions made her question being part of a selective organization.  After learning of the Christian principles and aims of Tri Delta, she consented to become a member.

~Tri Delta was the first sorority to plan and perfect an alumni system.

~Tri Delta was the first women’s fraternity to hold a national Leadership Conference.

~Tri Delta was the first to publish a book length history titled A Detailed Record of Delta Delta Delta, 1888-1907.

~We use one letter three times over because our letters are the same both ways.  When you look at them in the mirror, you see them in their true form representing that in Tri Delta, we show true reflections of ourselves.

~71% of “Who’s Who in America” are Greek.  There are more listed for Tri Delta than any other sorority.

~Tri Delta began regular publication of a quarterly magazine earlier in its existence than any other women’s fraternity.
