cedar rapids civil rights commission meetings
On October 13 at 7:30 p.m., the Cedar Rapids Civil Rights
Commission will be holding an Open Forum to discuss the issue of whether
or not to add the phrases "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" to
the city's nondiscrimination clause. In layman's terms, this basically
means that people cannot be fired, denied housing, public assistance, or
education merely on the basis of his or her sexual and/or gender
preference. The phrases will join such common categories as race, gender,
and creed.
As people who support equal rights for all human beings, Coe Alliance is
firm in its support for this amendment. On September 21, 1998, a
contingent of 10 or so students and 3 Coe professors attended a general
business meeting of the CRCRC where the public was allowed to speak
informally. Much was said on both sides of the issue; at least three Coe
people spoke, including Alliance co-moderator Eric Cline, who attracted the attention of
local news cameramen with his words.
On the whole, we considered the meeting a success. The footage taken at
the meeting was the top story on both Channel 2 and Channel 9 news that
evening at 10 p.m., with considerable positive coverage of Eric and his
stance.
What we need now is support from the community (both straight and non) to
push this amendment through to ratification. The more people we have at
the October 13 meeting, the more we can show the city Cedar Rapids that we
-- as decent Americans --
will not allow discrimination on any grounds. If you cannot attend (or
even if you can!) written comments are equally -- or perhaps even more --
important, as copies of written statements will be photocopied and passed
around to Commission members.
For those of you that don't feel like writing original pieces, we have a
form letter available, both in HTML and Rich Text format. Just change the
parts that apply to you (like address and date), sign it and either send
it off or mail it to Coe Alliance at:
