POL-135: State and Local Government
State and local governments are
becoming
increasingly important in American politics as the federal government
cuts
back its roles in policy making, spending, and administration. This
course
explores activities of state and local governments, with special
attention
to the City of Cedar Rapids and the State of Iowa. We will examine
political
institutions and citizen participation at the state and local level;
relations
between state and local governments; and specific current issues.
In 2005 we will pay particular attention to issues of cultural
conflict.
The course includes trips to observe
governments in action, as well as meetings with people involved in
local
politics and government. In 1998 we met with:
- Nancy H. Evans, Cedar Rapids Commissioner of Public Safety
- Mark Jones, Director of Solid Waste and Recycling, City of Cedar
Rapids
- State Senator Steve King (R-Kiron)
- Carol Martin, Against Local Option Tax (ALOT)
In 1999 we met with:
- Nancy H. Evans, Cedar Rapids Commissioner of Public Safety;
- Gary Hinzman, Director of the Sixth Judicial District's Community
Corrections
Program;
- Joe Nosek, President of the Mound View Neighborhood Association;
- State Senator Mark Shearer (D-Washington).
In 2001 we met with:
- Steve Holmes, filmmaker
- Carol Martin, Citizens for Responsible Government
- Jack Roeder, General Manager, Cedar Rapids Kernels
- Dale Todd, Cedar Rapids Commissioner of Parks and Recreation
In 2002 we met with:
- Rob Hogg, Sierra Club (and now Iowa state legislator)
- Richard Luther, Land Development Manager, City of Cedar Rapids
- David Zahn, Cedar Rapids Commissioner of Public Safety
In 2003 we met with:
- Dawn Jindrich, Budget Director, Linn County
- Lyle K. Hanson, Cedar Rapids Commissioner of Finance
- H.L.T. Quan, ACM Urban Studies Program
In 2005 we met with:
- Dale Todd, former Cedar Rapids Commissioner of Parks and
Recreation
- Randall McVey, Department of Development, City of Cedar Rapids
- Zeva Schub, ACM Urban Studies Program
