Boggs stared out through his old telescope trying to make out the ship in the distance. Was it friend or foe, the fog made it hard to tell. "I can't make its flag out old buddy" Boggs said to his best friend and partner, Hook. "I can't make i's flag out old buddy" replied Hook. Boggs said nothing but continued to peer through the telescope. Boggs had been at sea for what seemed like years now. Boggs was in his early sixties now and looked the part. He sported a greying beard that was quite long and matted. He was wearing an old blue captain's jacket that was about three sizes too large for him as the sleeves made his already small hands look child-like.
As the other ship came a little closer Boggs began to make out the flag little by little. "I don't like this partner, they're gettin' too close". "They're getting too close" Hook said calmly. "Pirates, they're god-damned Pirates! Prepare to fight, Hook" cried Boggs. "Prepare to fight, Hook" responded Hook. Boggs knew that a parrot could not fight but it made him feel better to pretend that he wasn't going to have to face the pirates alone. But he knew that his old ship would be no match if he tried to outrun them, for his old sails were tattered and torn.
Boggs quickly extended his arm as Hook scampered up onto his shoulder. Boggs ran below deck to prepare his lone cannon for battle. He slowly pushed the large old cannon to the gun opening on port side. "We're not going down without a fight, old fella!" exclaimed Boggs. "Not going down without a fight" chimed Hook. Boggs picked up one of the three cannonballs he had left on the ship and slid it down inside the cannon. I hope this old thing still has some kick to it yet, thought Boggs. He pushed the cannon head out the gun hole and quickly grabbed the torch from the wall to light the fuse. He waited until the enemy ship was into cannon range, and then he lighted the fuse. "Plug your ears, old fella!" he said to Hook. "Plug your ears, old fella!" responded Hook as always. Boggs waited anxiously for the cannonball to come roaring out with a thunderous explosion, but nothing happened. The fuse just burned out. "Damned old thing!" Boggs yelled in disgust at the cannon. "Damned old thing!" responded Hook. "Damned old thing!"
Boggs raced into his sleeping quarters, tossing things about in a mad search. He knew it was there somewhere. It would only be a matter of minutes, and those dirty scoundrels would be trying to board his ship in an attempt to kill him and steal what was rightfully his. Boggs knew that wasn't much, as he was a simple man, yet he was willing to die to defend his ship and his one true mate, Hook. Just then, Boggs pulled from under his bed a mighty sword that glistened in the rays of light that the candles cast across the room. Boggs quickly made his way to the deck to find that the pirates were already attempting to board. His hand tightened around the grip of his sword as he was determined to show no fear. Boggs raced to the front of the ship to face the first pirates that had boarded. "Prepare to battle Hook!" "Prepare to battle!" yelled Hook as he leaped off Boggs' shoulder and onto the railing. Boggs continued on, swinging his sword in a furious motion as the pirates began to fall one by one. For a moment Boggs was a fighting machine. Boggs might have been old, but he could still fight. "Die you bastards, die!" cried Boggs, continuing to swing wildly at anything that approached him. Just then he felt a sharp pierce in his left side that doubled him over. "Die you bastards, Die" Hook bellowed from the railing in the distance. He reached down and felt the blood running through his fingers as quickly as water. One of the pirates delivered a crippling kick to Boggs' side that sent him sprawling onto his back. As he stared up he saw nothing but unfriendly faces and long swords staring back at him. "Where's the rest of your crew old man?" bellowed one of the pirates that Boggs couldn't see. "It is only I," responded Boggs in a beaten voice. As he said that, the pirates parted to create a slight opening that a large burly man with a long scar running down his left cheek stepped through, sneering down at Boggs through his one eye. "You are down to your last strike, old man. Where is your crew?" Boggs did not speak, but only shook his head. The pirate laughed a hearty laugh and began to turn,"Kill him." In unison the pirates raised their swords and with one swift stroke they plunged them.......
"Mr. Boggs, Mr. Boggs, the game is over. You fell asleep again." Boggs rubbed his eyes as he began to focus. He could see the television set sitting in front of him, still on. "Who won?" Boggs asked. "The Pirates did, 7-5. "Damn!" muttered Boggs. "Damn!" Boggs heard in the distance. He spun his head around, "Hook?" But there was nobody else around. Boggs scratched his head. "The Yankees put up a good fight, but they were no match for the Pirates tonight. Hopefully, they can win game seven, tomorrow." added the lady. As the nurse began to push him back to his room, Boggs still groggy muttered "We'll do battle again tomorrow, you scum!"
