Charles Stanley Reinhart (1844-1896) was a genre painter and illustrator who worked for Harper and Brothers. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, he studied in Paris and Munich. His work appears in the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C. (Source: Mantle Fielding's Dictionary of American Painters, Sculptors, & Engravers). This illustration appeared with the story in Harper's Magazine (80: 141-151) in December 1889.
