The Coe College Festival of Bands 

Traditionally held each year in April, Coe's Festival of Bands brings a major guest conductor to campus to assist in the celebration of the many facets of band music.

David Shaffer

Robert SheldonDavid Shaffer was born in Columbus, Ohio and attended Grove City High School, Grove City, Ohio. He holds a Bachelor Degree from The Ohio State University and a Master of Music Degree from Miami University (Ohio). Mr. Shaffer has taught in the Hamilton, Ohio; Northridge, Ohio; and Wyoming, Ohio schools. Mr. Shaffer has been associated with the Miami University Marching Band for 30 years.

Mr. Shaffer has over 250 compositions and arrangements in print. His compositions have been used at clinics and music festivals around the world and have been placed on contest required-performance lists in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and Asia. Mr. Shaffer has been the recipient of the ASCAP Standard Award in Music Composition for 18 years. Mr. Shaffer is in demand as a conductor for new music reading clinics, music festivals, and music education seminars. During the Summer of 1986 and 1992, he served as instrumental director for the Saskatchewan School of Fine Arts. In February of 1997 he conducted a program of his music, with the China Youth Corps Band in the National Concert Hall, Taipei, Taiwan. He has also conducted his own compositions at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago. Mr. Shaffer is a past adjudicator for Drum Corps International and Drum Corps Midwest and has judged championship events for both organizations.

The Festival Concerts

On Saturday, April 9, at 8:00 p.m. in Sinclair Auditorium, David Shaffer will join the Coe College Concert Band as a guest conductor for several of his own works. Other featured works will include a new band composition by Coe's composition teacher, Josh Reznicow.   Shaffer will also work with the Elementary Honor Bands, which will perform at 4:00 p.m. that day and with the Coe Junior and Senior Honor Bands, who will present their Festival concert on Sunday, April 10, at 4:00 p.m.  Also featured during the Festival, on Thursday, April 7, at 7:00, will be a free concert by the Kirkwood Community College Concert Band, directed by Dr. Joe Perea, and the New Horizons Band of Cedar Rapids, conducted by Alan Lawrence. Tickets for the Honor Band concerts will be available by emailing and tickets for the Coe College Concert Band performance will be available at the door.

The Coe College Festival of Bands, under the administration of Dr. Carson, was established in 1994 and has featured a number of respected composers and conductors:
