PHI MU ALPHA SINFONIA - Major Sponsor

On October 25, 1898, gentlemen of Boston's New England Conservatory voted to accept the new bylaws of a men's music club. With the acceptance of these bylaws, Sinfonia was born. Ossian Mills was the founding father of Sinfonia and became the national president in April of 1901. Because of Mills' influence and ideals of brotherhood, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia determined that: "The object of this fraternity shall be the development of the best and truest fraternal spirit; the mutual welfare and brotherhood of musical students; the advancement of music in America and loyalty to the Alma Mater . . ."

With this philosophy in place, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia has grown to almost 400 active chapters over the past century, including the chapter here at Coe College, and the original chapter at the New England Conservatory.

Sinfonia has always been an integral part of the production of the Jazz Summit, providing stage and logistical assistance, helping run the festival, and spending a great amount of time assisting with preparations for the festival. Sinfonia also provides financial support for the festival. The Jazz Summit developed out of the Horizons Jazz Festival, which was an official activity of the Beta Kappa Chapter of Sinfonia.

Toting a resume that includes performances with Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Cyrus Chestnut, Ellis Marsalis and many more, Jae Sinnett is making his first appearance at Jazz Summit. A renowned jazz percussionist/composer and radio personality, Sinnett has five recordings as a leader. His fourth release, "Listen," reached the #1 slot on the National Gavin Radio charts. Jae's latest, "The Better Half," represents some of his most adventurous writing and playing to date. Sinnett attended Norfolk State and Old Dominion Universities as a Music Education major and taught for six years at the Governor's Magnet School for the Arts in Hampton Roads.

Delbert Bernabela, Saxophone

Born and raised on the island of Aruba, Bernabela left the island to study at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After graduating in 1984, Delbert returned to the island to form the highly successful Delbert Bernabela Jazz Quartet, which released its debut CD in the mid-1990's. Bernabela was featured at the 1995 Coe College Jazz Summit.

Allen Farnham, Piano

Allen began studying piano at age twelve. After graduating in 1983 from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio with degrees in classical piano and jazz studies, Farnham began his professional performing and recording career. 1984 saw a move to New York and stints as an accompanist for (among others) Mel Torme and Susannah McCorkle. Allen has several recordings
on the Concord Record label, the latest titled "Allen Farnham Meets the Rias Big Band."

Terry Burrell, Bass

Born in California, Terry Burrell attended Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA as a Music Education major. Burrell started playing trumpet and then switched to bass in later years. Playing acoustic and electric bass, Burrell has made a name for himself with his performances alongside saxophonist Steve Coleman, Chuck Mangione, Hilton Ruiz and many more.

Brent Sandy, Trumpet

As an Educational Clinician for the Conn division of United Musical Instruments, USA, Sandy performs and records with ODDBAR, a "creative chamber music ensemble." Sandy plays lead/jazz trumpet in Orquesta de Jazz y Salsa Alto Maiz, a Latin dance band that was featured at the 1997 International Association of Jazz Educators Convention in Chicago. Brent presents improvisation clinics, participates in educational residencies, adjudicates numerous jazz festivals, and has a private teaching studio in Iowa City, Iowa. Sandy is also a member of the executive board of the Iowa City Jazz Festival.

James Warrick, Drums

Director of Jazz Studies at New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois since 1982, Warrick supervises and conducts daily rehearsals of four jazz ensembles, combo program, concert band and sports pep band. Groups under Warrick's direction have performed at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic, international convention of the International Association of Jazz
Educators, national convention of the National Band Association, and many others. Warrick has been the designer, engineer, and consultant for sound reinforcement for the jazz groups that perform at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic since 1991. Since 1982, he has brought, among others, Dizzy Gillespie, Maynard Ferguson and Bob Baca to perform for his students at New Trier.
