PHI MU ALPHA SINFONIA - Major Sponsor
On October 25, 1898, gentlemen of Boston's New England Conservatory voted to accept the new bylaws of a men's music club. With the acceptance of these bylaws, Sinfonia was born. Ossian Mills was the founding father of Sinfonia and became the national president in April of 1901. Because of Mills' influence and ideals of brotherhood, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia determined that: "The object of this fraternity shall be the development of the best and truest fraternal spirit; the mutual welfare and brotherhood of musical students; the advancement of music in America and loyalty to the Alma Mater . . ."
With this philosophy in place, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia has grown to almost 400 active chapters over the past century, including the chapter here at Coe College, and the original chapter at the New England Conservatory.
Sinfonia has always been an integral
part of the production of the Jazz Summit, providing stage and logistical
assistance, helping run the festival, and spending a great amount of time
assisting with preparations for the festival. Sinfonia also provides financial
support for the festival. The Jazz Summit developed out of the Horizons
Jazz Festival, which was an official activity of the Beta Kappa Chapter
of Sinfonia.
